Suffolk & Essex Coast & Heaths National Landscape

This incredible National Landscape stretches from Kessingland in North Suffolk, down to the Stour Estuary in North Essex. It’s an immensely varied landscape, featuring shingle beaches, forests, ancient woodlands, farmland, estuaries, marshes, and meadows.

There are hundreds of miles of walks to explore, the three main routes include the Suffolk Coast Path, the Sandlings Walk and the Stour and Orwell Walk. You can also explore the many towns and villages within the designated National Landscape.

Orwell Country Park

Orwell Country Park is a collection of important wildlife sites on the edge of Ipswich. It’s a peaceful place to explore and discover a range of wildlife, including birds in the Orwell estuary, marine mammals and bats.

Follow the designated paths, which meander through the main areas of the park, taking care to avoid the mudflats.

Perfect for: Wildlife spotting

Ipswich Waterfront Walk

One of our favourite walks in Ipswich, this stroll takes in the town’s bustling waterfront, lush green spaces and historic landscapes.

Discover Piper’s Vale nature reserve, Holywell Park, the Orwell Bridge and a wide selection of cafes, bistros and restaurants along the waterfront.

Perfect for: Varied scenery and plenty of places to stop for a bite to eat

Pin Mill

Get closer to nature with this peaceful riverside walk at Pin Mill.  Starting at Pin Mill car park, the circular walk passes through heathland and woodland with spectacular views of the beautiful River Orford. Take care along the foreshore at high tide.

Perfect for: Riverside scenery

Wherstead Woodlands

Discover ancient woodland, the Stalls Valley and the pretty villages of Wherstead and Freston along one of the most popular walks in Ipswich.

Start at the Suffolk Food Hall and head to Freston Wood, taking in the riverside views. The walk passes through Freston and Wherstead villages and offers some incredible views over the National Landscape on the walk back.
